Contrôle de la teneur en arsenic résiduel dans la région de Yellowknife
L’arsenic est présent à l’état naturel dans le sol, les roches et l’eau de la terre et se trouve souvent à proximité de l’or. Bien qu’il ne soit pas dangereux pour la santé lorsqu’il demeure là où il se trouve naturellement, il peut être libéré sous forme de poussière dans l’environnement lors des activités minières. Sous cette forme, il peut avoir un effet sur les personnes, la terre, l’air et l’eau s’il est présent en quantités ou en concentrations suffisamment élevées.
Dans la région entourant Yellowknife, Ndilǫ et Dettah, le gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (GTNO) a collaboré avec des chercheurs universitaires pour effectuer une surveillance des taux d’arsenic dans l’eau, les sédiments, les sols et les poissons et a mené des études sur les effets sur la santé humaine et écologique.

Puis-je boire l’eau?
Oui. L’eau potable à Yellowknife, Ndilǫ et Dettah est bonne à boire. Elle est régulièrement analysée pour s’assurer qu’elle demeure conforme aux Recommandations pour la qualité de l’eau potable au Canada. Cela dit, il n’est jamais recommandé de boire de l’eau de surface non traitée en raison des bactéries et des virus pouvant vous rendre malade, quelle que soit la concentration d’arsenic.

Grand lac des Esclaves, baie Back et baie de Yellowknife
- Toutes les activités récréatives sont sans danger, y compris la nage, la baignade et la pêche.
- La pêche est sans danger.

Arsenic in the Yellowknife area
Arsenic occurs naturally in the earth’s soil, rock and water and is often found alongside gold. While not hazardous to our health where it is found naturally, it can be released as a dust into the environment during mining activities. In this form, it can impact people, land, air, and water if in high enough quantities/levels.
In the area surrounding Yellowknife, Ndilǫ, and Dettah, the Government of the Northwest Territories, in collaboration with university researchers, has conducted monitoring and specific human health and ecological studies of arsenic levels in water, sediments, soils and fish.

Great Slave Lake, Back Bay and Yellowknife Bay
- All types of recreational activities are safe including swimming and wading.
- It is safe to fish.
- Children should not put mud or sediments in their mouths.
- It is safe to pick berries.
- It is safe to hunt and consume wild game harvested from the Yellowknife, Ndilǫ and Dettah area.
- It is safe to eat garden vegetables grown near Yellowknife, Ndilǫ and Dettah.
- Mushrooms are safe to pick and eat 25 km from Yellowknife. Most (edible) mushrooms 10 km from Yellowknife are safe, except for pine mushrooms and common funnel mushrooms (Tricholomataceae family).
- First time mushroom pickers should go with an experienced person, especially when planning to eat what is gathered.
- Check the identity of your mushrooms with an experienced harvester, buyer or biologist.
Kam Lake, Frame Lake, Jackfish Lake, Rat Lake, Peg Lake, Meg Lake, Fox Lake, Handle Lake, Gar Lake, David Lake, and other lakes near Giant Mine.
- It is safe to boat, water ski, canoe, and hike in and around these lakes.
- Swimming and wading are not recommended.
- People should avoid picking mushrooms or berries within 10 km of the old Giant and Con mine sites.

Water Monitoring
The NWT Cumulative Impact Monitoring Program (NWT CIMP) funded a multidisciplinary research project with Carleton University that examined the recovery in Yellowknife area lakes from 50 years of arsenic pollution. The project identified factors preventing recovery and biological consequences.
Key project findings:
- Shallow lakes may have slower recovery rates because of under-ice redistribution of arsenic from sediments to overlying water.
- Changes in winter flow due to climate change may affect the cycling of arsenic between sediments and overlying water under ice.
- Conditions under which there is increased oxygen under ice which can reduce the amount of arsenic being released from sediment.
- Short-term experiments showed that arsenic in surface water reacts with sunlight to create a less toxic form of arsenic.

Fish Monitoring
ECC has collaborated with several universities and researchers to conduct fish sampling programs in lakes located within a 25 km radius of Yellowknife. Collected data was utilized to inform local human health risk assessments completed by ECC. Additionally HSS uses all data to update their advice to residents on arsenic in Yellowknife lake water.
During the various engagement opportunities, people indicated that Great Slave Lake is where they primarily obtained their fish. The HHRA therefore assumed that 10% of the fish that people eat would be obtained from inland lakes such as Mason or Duck lakes, while the remaining 90% would be from Yellowknife Bay.
Both Background (fish outside the 25km radius) and Yellowknife Bay fish have the same flesh concentration of 0.09mg/kg for white fish. What this means is that people can eat as much fish from Yellowknife Bay as they would like. .
If people ate 100% of their fish from inland lakes over a lifetime, their risk levels would be low.

Soil Monitoring
Another NWT CIMP-funded project was established with Queen’s University to examine regional variability in soil geochemistry in the area impacted by legacy mining activities. The project investigated concentrations of arsenic and other elements in soils around Yellowknife. Over 400 soil samples were collected from undisturbed locations within 30 km of Yellowknife over two years.
Project results are consistent with previous studies:
- Arsenic concentrations in soils are highly variable at the local scale, and even between field duplicates. This is likely due to the uneven distribution of arsenic rich minerals in the soil samples.
- Distance and direction from former ore roasters, soil depth, elevation and terrain type all influence total arsenic concentration in soils.
Legacy Arsenic Human Health Risk Assessment
Members of the public and Indigenous governments and Indigenous organizations expressed concern about what arsenic might be doing to their health, so the Government of the Northwest Territories Department of Environment and Climate Change, in partnership with the NWT Regional Office of Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, conducted a human health risk assessment (HHRA).
What did the HHRA measure?
The purpose of the HHRA was to measure potential exposure and assess the health risks for people living in cabins or houses on inland lakes in the area as well as people using the areas around Yellowknife, Ndilǫ, and Dettah for traditional and recreational activities. Arsenic exposure can cause cancer; therefore, this assessment looked at the risk of developing cancer from arsenic concentration in soil, indoor dust, water, sediment, and country foods in the area, that were above normal background levels. Arsenic and antimony were identified by study researchers, with input from Indigenous governments and Indigenous organizations and stakeholders, as the key contaminants to measure in this study in addition to a request from the Department of Health and Social Services to include mercury.
How does the Legacy Arsenic HHRA link to previous health and environmental studies?
The HHRA built upon the information we learned from the Giant Mine Remediation Project’s Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment (HHERA). In other words, the risks associated with recreational and on the land activities were added to risks previously determined through the HHERA for people living in Yellowknife, Ndilo and Dettah. The results of this HHRA assessment reflect the risks for living in Yellowknife, Ndilǫ, or Dettah and the incremental risks associated with people using areas outside of their communities for recreational and traditional activities.
Short-term exposures from recreational activities such as hunting, harvesting, running, hiking, and swimming were studied. Exposure from eating fish and periodically drinking water from inland lakes in the area was also considered. Long term year-round exposure to residents living on or using inland lakes, including Vee, Landing, Ryan, Walsh, Banting, Prosperous, Madeline, Pontoon, Prelude, and River Lake were studied. A specific traditional land use (TLU) area was identified within a 25 km radius to the southeast of the Giant Mine site where current traditional land uses by local Indigenous peoples occur.
Results
Arsenic exposure and associated risks of developing cancer were low.
Low risk means that the risk of getting cancer is similar to the risks from medical procedures such as annual x-rays at the dentist or having one CT scan.
Recreational Areas
- There is very low risk to people who live in Yellowknife, Ndilǫ, and Dettah, who enjoy all types of recreational areas within the study area and beyond. This includes fishing, hunting, harvesting, berry picking, swimming, boating, hiking, and camping.
- There is very low risk to people living on the inland lakes, for example Vee, Landing, Ryan, Walsh, Banting, Prosperous, Madeline, Pontoon, Prelude, and River lakes, who eat country foods from the area.
- Outside of the 10km area around the two mines, it is safe to eat mushrooms, except for mushrooms from the Tricholomataceae family including Tricholoma "pine" mushrooms, Clitocybe "common funnel" mushrooms and White Matsutake mushrooms. These mushrooms should not be eaten within 25km of the Giant and Con Mine, however, at distances of 25km and greater it is safe to eat mushrooms as long as mushrooms are properly identified. The same advice applies for chaga mushrooms harvesting in the area.
Traditional Land Use Areas
Risks are low for local Indigenous peoples who have a traditional lifestyle that includes hunting, fishing, and gathering within the study area and fishing from Great Slave Lake. Locally harvested country foods are a healthy, and often preferred, alternative to supermarket foods. The following activities represent a very low risk:
- Eating fish from inland lakes, and Great Slave Lake in the study area, including their eyes, skin/fatty layer, and organs.
- Eating berries from around the Yellowknife area. (However, it is still recommended to pick berries outside of10 km of the old Giant and Con mine sites. .
- Eating small mammals, land birds such as grouse or ptarmigan and waterfowl from around the Yellowknife area.
- Eating fish that have been in Baker Creek is not a health concern. People can safely eat Arctic grayling caught in the Yellowknife area and within Great Slave Lake.

Additional Analysis
Swimming
There have been concerns expressed about swimming and wading on the shores of Ndilǫ and Latham Island and at Long Lake beach. The results from the HHERA determined that these activities pose a very low risk and can continue to be enjoyed safely. Children should not put mud or sediments in their mouths.
Mercury
The GNWT Department of Health and Social Services (GNWT HSS) identified mercury as a constituent of interest in fish and requested that it be evaluated in the HHRA. The study determined that mercury concentrations in fish from all the inland lakes were below the Health Canada maximum limit of 0.5 mg/kg wet weight (ww) with the exception of 1 large northern pike from Mason Lake and 14 out of 18 northern pike from Lower Martin Lake. All lake whitefish in Lower Martin Lake were below the Health Canada maximum limit. GNWT HSS has issued an advisory for eating northern pike in Lower Martin Lake.
Ingraham Trail workers
At the request of the GNWT Department of Infrastructure, a separate evaluation was also completed to assess risks for outdoor workers along the Ingraham Trail/Highway 4, between Yellowknife and the Yellowknife River. The results tell us that workers are not at risk for arsenic exposure. Workers should always follow safe work practices, including wearing standard personal protection and using safety equipment.
